Endless glass or carbon fibers are impregnated by machine using a synthetic resin and are then placed on a rotating tool mandrel by CNC controlled machines. The mandrels rotates while a carriage moves horizontally, laying down the fibers in the desired pattern. Filament winding is well qualified for the manufacturing of axially symmetrical components such as tubes, rollers, beams and tanks.
The technique particularly stands out due to a high degree of precision and reproducibility. The process can be largely automated and is an economically attractive solution for single parts and mass production.
